VMware Workstation Player can present a host computer's physical CD/DVD drive to a virtual machine. If the guest operating system cannot reliably read that drive through normal direct access, Legacy Emulation Mode provides a compatibility path for basic optical-media access.

What Legacy Emulation Mode Does
Legacy Emulation Mode is a compatibility option for a virtual machine's physical CD/DVD device. It changes how the guest operating system communicates with the host optical drive, avoiding some failures associated with normal direct or raw-mode access.
The host operating system runs VMware Workstation Player and manages the actual drive. The guest operating system runs inside the virtual machine. Between them is a virtual CD/DVD device: virtual hardware that can connect either to an ISO image or to a physical host drive.
In normal direct access, the guest communicates more directly with the physical optical device. Legacy emulation uses a more compatible device-access method instead. It is intended as a workaround when the physical drive, its host driver, or the guest operating system does not work reliably with normal direct access.
When to Use Legacy Emulation Mode
Consider enabling it when all of the following are true:
- The virtual machine is configured to use a physical host CD/DVD drive.
- The host can read the disc, or the drive is otherwise known to be functional.
- The guest cannot read the attached disc, does not detect it correctly, or reports unstable or repeated read errors.
- Normal direct or raw-mode access appears to be the compatibility problem.
Use this option only when normal access fails. Legacy emulation supports basic data-disc reading but does not provide the full capabilities of direct or raw optical-device access.
Physical Drive Versus ISO Image
A physical CD/DVD drive is an actual optical drive attached to the host computer. An ISO image is a file that represents the contents of a disc. Legacy Emulation Mode applies to the virtual CD/DVD device when it is connected to a physical host drive; it is not generally a solution for problems involving an ISO file.
If an ISO works but the physical drive does not, investigate the host drive, disc, connection state, permissions, and guest device configuration rather than changing ISO settings.
Prerequisites and Safety Checks
- Power off the VM completely. Do not change this virtual hardware option while the VM is running or suspended.
- Confirm that a virtual CD/DVD device already appears in the VM's hardware list.
- Confirm that the device is configured to use the intended physical host drive, not an ISO image.
- Make sure your account can change the VM configuration and access the host optical drive.
- Test the disc in the host operating system first. A damaged disc, dirty disc, failing drive, or host driver problem cannot be fixed by emulation.
Enable Legacy Emulation Mode in Workstation Player
- Shut down the target virtual machine completely.
- Open VMware Workstation Player and select the virtual machine.
- Open the Player management options and choose the virtual machine's settings. The exact menu wording can vary slightly by Player version.
- Select the CD/DVD device in the virtual hardware list.
- Open the device's Advanced options.

Specialized optical software may therefore fail even when ordinary file browsing works. If you need CD writing, multisession access, or digital audio extraction, resolve the direct-access compatibility problem and test the normal configuration instead.
Using One Physical Drive with Multiple VMs
One physical optical drive cannot safely be actively connected to multiple virtual machines at the same time. Each VM may have a virtual CD/DVD device that references the same host drive, but the running VMs must not claim that drive concurrently.
When several VMs use legacy-emulated CD/DVD devices mapped to the same physical drive:
- Start each VM with its CD/DVD device disconnected.
- After a VM has started, connect the physical drive only to the VM that currently needs it.
- Disconnect the drive from that VM before connecting it to another VM.
This prevents simultaneous claims on the same host CD/DVD hardware and avoids confusing connection, locking, or read failures.
Verification Checklist
- Use a known-good standard data CD or DVD.
- Check that the guest detects the virtual optical device.
- Check that the device is connected to the VM rather than disconnected.
- Browse the disc contents from the guest.
- Compare the result with the host operating system's ability to read the same disc.
Successful file browsing confirms that basic data-disc access works. It does not prove that burning, multisession reading, or audio extraction will work.

If the Guest Still Does Not See the Drive

If Reading Works but Specialized Software Fails
Successful data-disc browsing combined with failed burning or audio-ripping usually indicates a capability limitation rather than a basic connection failure. Confirm whether the application requires CD writing, multisession support, or digital audio extraction. If so, disable legacy emulation and test direct access only after the underlying driver or compatibility issue has been addressed.
Disable Legacy Emulation Mode
Disable the option when direct access is required and the normal configuration is known to work:
- Power off the virtual machine.
- Open its virtual machine settings.
- Select the CD/DVD device.
- Open the advanced device options.
