VMware Tools is a bundled collection of guest-side device drivers and management utilities. You install it inside the guest operating system—the operating system running in a virtual machine—not only on the physical computer.

What VMware Tools does

Supported guest operating systems
VMware Tools supports major guest families including Windows, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, and NetWare. Availability and behavior are not identical across these families. Installer format, service names, supported drivers, and integration features can vary by guest operating system and VMware product release.
Choose the tools package appropriate for the guest platform. A package intended for Windows is not interchangeable with a Linux package, and a guest may have additional distribution-specific packaging requirements.

VMware Tools installation media
VMware Tools installers are distributed as ISO image files. An ISO image is a disc-image file that can be presented to a computer as optical installation media.
When you start the VMware Tools installation or upgrade action in VMware Player, Player makes the relevant image available to the virtual machine. It normally does this by temporarily attaching the ISO to the virtual machine's first virtual CD/DVD drive.

Verifying a Windows installation
Use version-appropriate Windows interface labels because they vary between releases. Look for VMware Tools in one or more of these locations:
- The installed-programs or applications list.
