How to Download VMware Player for Windows or Linux

Learn how to find the official VMware Player download, choose the correct Windows or Linux installer, check compatibility, and verify the downloaded file safely.

What VMware Player Does

VMware Player is a desktop virtualization application for running virtual machines (VMs). A virtual machine is a software-defined computer that receives allocated resources from the physical computer, such as processor time, memory, storage, and network access.

The physical computer runs a host operating system. VMware Player runs on that host. An operating system installed inside a virtual machine is the guest operating system. For example, if your physical computer runs Windows and you create a Linux VM, Windows is the host operating system and Linux is the guest operating system.

When searching a current software catalog, look for both VMware Player and VMware Workstation Player. The latter is a product name users may encounter in later product generations or download listings.

Licensing and Intended Use

Availability and permitted use depend on the licensing terms that apply to the specific VMware release and download portal. VMware Player has historically been associated with personal, non-commercial use, but you should not assume that older licensing rules apply to a current release.

Review the current license terms before downloading or using the product. Personal-use eligibility is different from licensing for a business, commercial deployment, educational institution, or managed environment. An organization may need a different product entitlement, subscription, or agreement even when an individual can use a product for personal purposes.

Find the Official Download

  1. Open the official VMware or Broadcom software-download portal using a trusted bookmark or a vendor-provided reference.
  2. Use the product catalog or desktop virtualization category to search for VMware Player or VMware Workstation Player.
  3. Select a release that supports your host operating system and intended guest workloads.
  4. Read the displayed license and download conditions. Depending on the release and portal, you may need to sign in, register, confirm an entitlement, accept terms, or complete another access step.
  5. Choose the Windows-host or Linux-host package, accept any applicable terms, and start the download.

The product may be listed under a different current name, and older releases may not appear in the standard product list. If the expected entry is missing, search the official catalog using both product names and check whether account sign-in, entitlement verification, or registration is required.

Choose the Installer for the Host, Not the Guest

The installer must match the operating system installed directly on the physical computer. It does not match the operating system that you plan to run inside the VM.

For example, a Windows PC that will run an Ubuntu VM needs the Windows version of VMware Player. A Linux workstation that will run a Windows VM needs the Linux version.

Release and Architecture Considerations

Installer availability depends on the selected release, host operating-system version, and processor architecture. A newer release may no longer support an older Windows version, Linux distribution, or kernel. Select a release that is supported by your host rather than choosing solely by the guest operating system.

64-Bit Hardware Requirement

VMware Player releases from version 4 onward require a 64-bit CPU. A 64-bit CPU is a processor capable of using the 64-bit instruction architecture required by these releases. A 32-bit CPU cannot run VMware Player version 4 or later; installing a 64-bit host operating system does not change that physical limitation.

Do not confuse these two checks:

  • CPU architecture: whether the physical processor is 64-bit capable.
  • Host operating system architecture: whether the installed Windows or Linux system is 64-bit.

A computer can have a 64-bit CPU while running a 32-bit host operating system. That may affect which software is available, so check both the processor and the installed operating system.

Hardware virtualization — Check for Intel VT-x or AMD-V and whether it is enabled when required — Some guest operating systems and virtualization features depend on processor-assisted virtualization.

Guest operating system — Confirm that the selected VMware release supports the operating system you intend to install in the VM — Host compatibility does not guarantee guest compatibility.

Review the VMware Player system requirements for the exact release. Hardware virtualization is commonly exposed as Intel VT-x or AMD-V. It may need to be enabled in BIOS or UEFI, although the exact requirement depends on the guest workload and VMware release.

Windows Checks

  • Open Settings > System > About and review System type to identify whether Windows is 64-bit.
  • Open Task Manager > Performance > CPU and review the Virtualization field.

If virtualization is disabled, the firmware setting may be called Intel VT-x, Intel Virtualization Technology, SVM, or AMD-V. Consult the computer or motherboard documentation before changing firmware settings.

Linux Checks

uname -m

An x86_64 result indicates a 64-bit x86 system.

lscpu | grep -i virtualization

A virtualization type such as VT-x or AMD-V may be displayed when the capability is detected.

df -h

Use this command to review available disk capacity before saving the installer or creating large virtual disks.

Download VMware Player

  1. Choose a supported VMware Player or VMware Workstation Player release for the physical computer's host operating system.
  2. Confirm the platform, architecture, and host-support notes shown by the official download portal.
  3. Accept the applicable license terms and complete any required sign-in, registration, or entitlement confirmation.
  4. Save the installer in a known location, such as your normal downloads directory or a dedicated installation-files directory.
  5. Wait until the transfer completes. Do not launch a partially downloaded file.
  6. Record the product name and release version. Retain any account, entitlement, or license information needed during installation or later use.

After downloading, continue with installing VMware Player on Windows or installing VMware Player on Linux. VMware Player must be installed before you can create or open virtual machines.

Verify the Download

Before executing the installer, confirm that the downloaded file is the one you intended to obtain:

  • Check that the filename identifies the expected product and host platform.
  • Check that the release version matches the version selected in the official portal.
  • Check that the file type is appropriate for the host, such as a Windows installer or Linux package.
  • Compare the file size with the value published by the vendor when one is provided.
  • Use a vendor-published checksum or digital signature when available. A checksum is a file-integrity value that can reveal whether a file was corrupted or altered.

An installer that is unexpectedly small, has a misleading extension, fails to open, or later reports a damaged package may be incomplete or corrupt. Delete it and download it again from the official source. Do not execute a file whose source or integrity cannot be confirmed.

Troubleshooting Download Problems

The Download Is Not Visible

The product may be listed under VMware Workstation Player rather than VMware Player. The portal may also require sign-in, agreement acceptance, entitlement verification, or registration. Search the official catalog using both names and review the access requirements for the selected release. A requested older version may no longer be available through the standard listing.

Only 64-Bit Installers Are Available

This is expected for VMware Player version 4 and later. Verify the physical CPU architecture. A 32-bit processor cannot run these releases, so do not attempt to install a current 64-bit release on it. Evaluate supported hardware or an alternative virtualization solution instead.

The Installer Does Not Match the Intended Operating System

Recheck which system is the host. If Windows is installed on the physical computer, download the Windows-host installer even when the guest will be Linux. If Linux is installed on the physical computer, select the Linux-host package.

The File Will Not Open or Appears Damaged

An interrupted transfer, incomplete file, corruption, or an untrusted source can cause this problem. Delete the file, download it again from the official portal, and compare a vendor-provided checksum or signature where available.

The VM Needs Virtualization Features

Hardware virtualization may be disabled in firmware, unavailable on the CPU, or affected by another hypervisor or security feature. Check the CPU and firmware settings, then consult the host-compatibility documentation for the selected VMware release.

What to Do After Downloading

Downloading the installer does not install VMware Player. Run the separate Windows or Linux installation procedure only after confirming the file and reviewing the release requirements. Once the application is installed, you can create a virtual machine, start a virtual machine, or open an existing VM.
