Add Your Raspberry Pi to Rastrack

Learn how to optionally register your Raspberry Pi's approximate location on the Rastrack community map using raspi-config, with privacy and compatibility guidance.

Rastrack is a community mapping service for Raspberry Pi owners who choose to submit location information. Its map provides a visual indication of how Raspberry Pi devices are distributed across geographic areas.

Rastrack is a third-party service, meaning it is operated independently from Raspberry Pi OS. Registration is optional and is not required for your Raspberry Pi to start, connect to a network, or run normally.

Consider privacy before sharing your location

Adding a Raspberry Pi to Rastrack involves voluntarily submitting geographic location information. Depending on the registration workflow, this might describe a country, region, or other area rather than an exact address.

  • Decide whether you want your device or approximate location represented on a public community map.
  • Submit only the detail requested by the service.
  • Do not add unnecessary personal information, such as your name, home address, or other identifying details.
  • If you change your mind, cancel the wizard before confirming when possible, and review the service's current privacy and removal guidance.

Prerequisites

Before attempting registration, make sure you have the following:

RequirementWhy it is neededHow to verify it
Internet connectionThe online wizard must communicate with the registration service, and the map requires network access.Confirm that the Raspberry Pi can access the internet. See Connect To The Internet.
Compatible operating systemThe Add to Rastrack entry was included in some versions of the configuration utility, but may not be present in current releases.Open raspi-config and inspect the available menus.
Administrative permissionLaunching the system configuration utility normally requires elevated privileges.Use a terminal account that can run commands with sudo.
Optional location sharingRegistration is a choice, not a Raspberry Pi requirement.Proceed only if you are comfortable submitting the requested geographic detail.
Access to the current Rastrack serviceIf the integrated menu entry is unavailable, the service may provide separate registration instructions.Check the service's current website or documentation if it is operating.

Open raspi-config

raspi-config is a menu-driven Raspberry Pi OS configuration utility. It is commonly used for system setup, such as changing interfaces, boot settings, and other Raspberry Pi options. Menu layout and available entries vary between Raspberry Pi OS releases.

Open a terminal and run:

sudo raspi-config

For more practice with terminal sessions, see Terminal In Raspbian and Raspi Config.

Select Add to Rastrack

Use the keyboard to navigate through the menus. Look for an entry named Add to Rastrack or a closely related Rastrack registration option. Select it if it is present.

This entry starts an interactive registration wizard: a guided sequence of prompts that collects and submits registration details. Because the wizard communicates with an online service, the Raspberry Pi needs a working internet connection.

Complete the registration wizard

  1. Read each prompt supplied by the wizard.
  2. Enter only the requested registration and location-related information.
  3. Review the values before choosing the confirmation or submission action.
  4. Wait for the wizard to report whether the online service accepted the submission.

A successful local wizard run does not guarantee a particular map display. The external service must be reachable and must accept the submitted information.

View the submitted location

After registration, open the current Rastrack map website or service page to view community submissions. A new entry might not be visible immediately. Map updates can be delayed, and the presentation of entries can change.

Do not assume that the map will show an exact pin, retain the entry permanently, or update within a particular time. The service controls how accepted submissions are displayed.

Registration outcomes and next steps

OutcomeLikely causeRecommended next step
Registration option appears in raspi-configThe installed configuration utility includes the supported integration.Run the wizard, review its prompts, and submit only if you accept the privacy decision.
Add to Rastrack is absentThe Raspberry Pi OS version does not include the historical integration, or the raspi-config package has changed.Do not force unsupported menu changes. Check the current Rastrack service instructions, if available.
The wizard cannot connectThe Raspberry Pi has no internet access, or a DNS or network problem is blocking communication.Verify connectivity, correct the network problem, and retry when appropriate.
The external service is unavailableThe third-party service may be temporarily unreachable, changed, or discontinued.Retry later and consult the service's current website or documentation.
The submission is not visible on the mapMap updates may be delayed, the submission may be incomplete or rejected, or the site may display entries differently.Allow time for an update, review the details if resubmission is offered, and follow current service guidance.

Troubleshooting

The Add to Rastrack option does not appear

This normally indicates a compatibility difference rather than a problem with your Raspberry Pi. Current Raspberry Pi OS releases may no longer include the menu item that existed in some earlier versions.

Do not edit system files or attempt to add an unsupported menu entry. If Rastrack is still operating, consult its current registration instructions. Otherwise, simply leave registration undone; it is optional.

The wizard cannot complete

First verify the Raspberry Pi's internet connection. A network or DNS problem can prevent the wizard from reaching the service. If connectivity works, the external service itself may have changed or become unavailable. Retry later and check its current guidance.

The location does not appear

Map presentation is controlled by the third-party service. Updates may be delayed, the submission may have been rejected or incomplete, or the map may no longer show entries in the same way. Review any available registration status or resubmission instructions without submitting unnecessary personal information.

You are concerned about privacy after starting

Cancel before confirmation when the wizard allows it. If you have already submitted information, consult the service's current privacy and removal options. In future attempts, provide no more precise information than the service requires.

Practical examples

Registering a home Raspberry Pi

  1. Connect the Raspberry Pi to the internet.
  2. Open a terminal and run sudo raspi-config.
  3. Select Add to Rastrack if the entry exists.
  4. Follow the prompts, review the location-related details, and confirm only if you accept the sharing decision.
  5. Check the current community map later for the submitted area.

The menu option is absent

Open raspi-config, confirm that no Add to Rastrack entry is available, and treat this as a version or service-availability issue. Check whether the current Rastrack service offers a direct registration method instead of trying to modify raspi-config.

Choosing not to share

Exit the configuration utility without registering. The Raspberry Pi remains fully usable because Rastrack is an optional online service.

Key points

  • Rastrack maps voluntary community submissions and is not a required Raspberry Pi feature.
  • Registration shares geographic information, so consider privacy before confirming.
  • Run sudo raspi-config from a terminal and look for Add to Rastrack when supported.
  • The wizard requires internet access and may request location-related details.
  • The menu item, registration workflow, third-party service, and map may change or become unavailable.
  • If the integrated option is missing, consult the service's current instructions rather than forcing unsupported changes.
