Installing Cisco Configuration Professional (CCP)
Learn how to install Cisco Configuration Professional on a supported workstation, verify prerequisites, choose an installation folder, and prepare CCP for router management.
Cisco Configuration Professional (CCP) is a workstation-based graphical application for configuring and monitoring supported Cisco routers. CCP is installed on the administrator's workstation, not directly on the router. After installation, you launch CCP and add or discover a router for management.
This lesson assumes that you have already downloaded the installer. For that prerequisite, see Downloading Cisco Configuration Professional.
Prepare the Workstation
Before starting setup, confirm that the workstation and installer are ready:
- Locate the previously downloaded CCP installer, which is the executable setup program used to install CCP.
- Confirm that the installer is intended for the workstation's operating system and matches the supported environment for your CCP release.
- Use an account with sufficient local permissions to run installers, write to the destination folder, and register desktop application files.
- Check that the workstation has adequate free disk space.
- Close unnecessary applications to reduce interruptions while setup copies and registers files.
CCP Installation Wizard Steps
Launch the Installer
- Open the folder containing the downloaded CCP installer.
- Run the installer. Depending on the operating system's security settings, you may receive a permission prompt. Approve the prompt only if you trust the installer and have authorization to install software.
- Read the initial welcome screen. It identifies the setup program and provides the option to proceed through the wizard.
- Continue to the license agreement step.
If the installer does not start, verify that you selected the intended downloaded file and that the download completed successfully. Also check your local installation permissions and workstation compatibility.
Accept the License Agreement
The setup wizard presents a license agreement, which contains the software usage terms. Review the agreement. You must select the acceptance option, if authorized to do so, before the wizard enables the next installation step. If you do not accept the terms, setup cannot continue.
Choose the Installation Location
The destination-folder screen lets you choose the installation directory, meaning the local folder where CCP program files are stored.
- The default location is normally appropriate for a standard workstation installation.
- Choose another approved local directory when organizational policy, storage layout, or user access requirements require it.
- Make sure the selected folder is writable by the installer account.
- Confirm that the destination drive has enough free space.
For a standard installation, retain the default directory and continue. For a custom installation, browse to the approved alternate directory, verify its write access and available storage, and then continue.
If the folder is rejected or file copying fails, use the default location or another writable local directory, free disk space, and check whether a workstation security policy restricts the selected path.
Start the Installation
Review the installation summary or confirmation screen, then select Install. This action begins copying and registering CCP application files on the workstation.
Allow the wizard to finish. Do not shut down the workstation, close the setup program, or interrupt the process while files are being copied. The duration depends on the workstation and the supporting components being checked or installed.
Choose Whether to Create a Desktop Shortcut
Setup may ask whether to create a desktop shortcut. A desktop shortcut is an optional desktop link that launches CCP.
- Select the shortcut option if you want a convenient desktop launch point.
- Clear the option if your workstation policy or personal preference does not require a shortcut.
This choice affects convenience only. CCP can still be installed and launched from the operating-system application menu or the selected installation directory.
Review the System and Software Requirements Check
During or after setup, CCP checks required workstation capabilities and supporting software. This system requirements check validates prerequisites that CCP needs to operate.
Read every result carefully:
- A successful result indicates that the checked prerequisite is present and acceptable.
- A failed result identifies a missing, incompatible, or unsupported component that may prevent CCP from running correctly.
- Resolve reported dependencies before using CCP for router management.
If a required component is missing, install or update the indicated prerequisite according to your workstation policy, then rerun the check or installer. A wizard that reaches completion is not necessarily proof that the workstation is fully ready to run the application.
Complete and Verify the Installation
When setup reports that installation is complete, select Finish. Finish is the final wizard action that closes setup.
Confirm that CCP is available by checking one or more of these locations:
- The desktop shortcut, if you selected one.
- The operating-system application menu.
- The installation directory selected during setup.
If CCP cannot be found, check the application menu and the selected installation directory first. If setup did not complete successfully, review its status and run the installer again after correcting the reported problem.

Practical Installation Examples
Standard Workstation Installation
- Open the folder containing the previously downloaded CCP installer.
- Run the installer and respond to any operating-system permission prompt.
- Continue past the welcome screen and accept the license terms.
- Retain the default installation directory unless local policy requires another location.
- Select Install and wait for setup to complete.
- Choose whether to create a desktop shortcut.
- Review the requirements results and resolve any failures.
- Select Finish, then verify CCP from the shortcut, application menu, or installation directory.
Expected result: CCP is installed locally and can be launched from an available launch point.
Custom Installation Location
- At the destination-folder screen, select an approved alternate local directory.
- Confirm that the directory is writable and that its drive has sufficient free storage.
- Continue through the installation and requirements screens.
- Select Finish, then verify that CCP launches from the application menu or selected directory.
Expected result: CCP is installed in the selected destination while retaining normal launch functionality.
Post-Installation Readiness Check
- Review the system and software requirement results from setup.
- Correct each listed missing dependency or unsupported component.
- Rerun the requirement check or installer if required.
- Launch CCP only after the workstation prerequisites are satisfied.
Expected result: The workstation is prepared for the subsequent task of adding a router to CCP.
Troubleshooting Installation Problems
The Installer Does Not Start
Likely causes include an incomplete download, selecting the wrong file, insufficient permission to run or install software, or an unsupported workstation environment.
- Verify that the intended installer was downloaded successfully.
- Use an account with appropriate local installation privileges.
- Confirm workstation compatibility before trying again.
Setup Cannot Continue Past the License Screen
The usual cause is that the license agreement has not been accepted. Review the terms and accept the agreement if you are authorized to do so.
The Destination Folder Is Rejected
The folder may not be writable, the drive may lack free space, or a local security policy may block installation there.
- Use the default location or another approved writable local directory.
- Free enough disk space for the installation.
- Consult local workstation policy if the path is restricted.
The Requirements Check Reports Missing Software
A required platform component or supporting dependency may be absent or incompatible. Read the result carefully, install or update the indicated prerequisite according to policy, and rerun the check or installer.
CCP Cannot Be Found After Setup
No desktop shortcut may have been created, or you may be checking the wrong location. Look in the operating-system application menu and the installation directory selected during setup. Create a shortcut manually if desired. If the installation did not complete successfully, review the setup status and reinstall after correcting the cause.
Next Step: Add a Router to CCP
Installation alone does not configure a router. The next task is to launch CCP and add or discover a supported router for management. Continue with Adding a Router to Cisco Configuration Professional. For broader context, review the Cisco Configuration Professional overview and the CCP configuration example.
