Install Oracle VirtualBox on Windows
Learn how to install Oracle VirtualBox as a Windows desktop application, select features and networking components, and verify the installation.
Oracle VirtualBox is desktop virtualization software used to create and run virtual machines. In this lesson, you will install the VirtualBox application on a Windows host operating system—the operating system running on the physical computer.
This guide covers the Windows host installation only. It does not cover creating a virtual machine or installing a guest operating system inside one. A guest operating system is installed later within a virtual machine.
Before you begin
- Use a supported Windows system. Check the current VirtualBox system requirements if you are unsure whether your computer is suitable.
- Make sure you have local administrator permissions. Windows may require approval before the installer can add system files, drivers, or networking components.
- Download the Windows installer before starting. The installer is a Windows executable that launches the setup wizard. If necessary, review how to download Oracle VirtualBox.
- Save your work and close applications that depend on network connectivity or virtualization. Network access may briefly stop while VirtualBox networking components are installed.
VirtualBox Windows installation stages
| Wizard stage | User action | Recommended choice | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome | Read the introduction and select Next. | Continue with the wizard. | This is the initial setup page. |
| Installation location | Review or change the destination folder. | Keep the default location for most computers. | Choose another local drive only when space or organizational policy requires it. |
| Feature selection | Review the components and integration options. | Keep the default feature set for typical desktop use. | Options may include shortcuts and components needed for normal operation. |
| Network-interface approval | Approve the Windows prompt when it appears. | Allow the components if virtual machines need standard networking. | The host connection can be interrupted briefly. |
| Installation progress | Start setup and wait. | Do not close the wizard while files and components are being installed. | VirtualBox registers program files and system components. |
| Completion | Finish the wizard. | Open VirtualBox Manager to verify the result. | A new installation normally has no virtual machines yet. |
Step 1: Start the installer
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder containing the downloaded VirtualBox Windows installer.
- Open the installer executable to launch the setup wizard.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control (UAC) prompt, review the publisher and application details. Select the approval option only when you obtained the installer from a trusted source and intend to install it.
User Account Control is a Windows permission mechanism that asks for confirmation before an application makes system-level changes. If your account is not an administrator, Windows may request administrator credentials.
Step 2: Continue from the welcome screen
The first setup page is the welcome screen. It identifies the product and begins the installation process. Select Next to continue.
Step 3: Choose the installation directory
The installation directory is the folder on the Windows host where VirtualBox program files are stored. The wizard displays a default destination folder. For most personal computers, leave this location unchanged and select Next.
Choose another local drive or folder when the system drive has limited free space or an organization requires applications to be installed in a particular location. The selected location must have enough free space and allow your administrator account to write application files.
Step 4: Select VirtualBox features
The feature-selection page lets you review which VirtualBox components and integration options will be installed. Feature selection means choosing the program components included by setup.
For typical desktop use, retain the default feature set. Optional integration items may add Start menu or desktop shortcuts and install components required for normal VirtualBox functionality. Advanced users or managed environments may change these choices to follow a specific software policy, but beginners should generally keep the defaults.
Select Next after reviewing the choices.
Step 5: Approve VirtualBox network interfaces
VirtualBox installs host networking components or virtual adapters that allow virtual machines to communicate through supported networking modes. These components are important for common VM networking configurations, including access through the host computer's network connection.
The wizard may warn that network connectivity will be temporarily interrupted. Save online work before continuing. When Windows asks for approval to install or update the VirtualBox network interfaces, approve the request if you need standard networking for your virtual machines.
Your connection should reconnect after setup. If it does not, wait briefly and check the Windows network status after the installation finishes.
Later, you can learn more about VirtualBox network modes and VirtualBox virtual networking.
Step 6: Install the selected components
- Confirm the selected installation folder and features.
- Choose the control that starts the installation, such as Install.
- Wait while the wizard copies files, installs drivers and networking components, and registers VirtualBox with Windows.
- Do not shut down Windows or close the installer during this process.
The duration depends on the computer and the components being installed. Additional Windows security or driver prompts may appear; review and approve trusted VirtualBox components as needed.
Step 7: Complete the installation
When setup reports that installation has finished, select Finish to close the wizard. If the wizard offers to launch VirtualBox, you may leave that option selected. Otherwise, open the application manually from the Windows Start menu or from a shortcut you selected during feature setup.
Verify the installation
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for Oracle VirtualBox and launch it, or open the selected desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Confirm that the VirtualBox Manager window opens without an installation error.
VirtualBox Manager is the main application used to create, configure, import, and run virtual machines. After a new installation, it is normal for the manager to show an empty list. No virtual machine is created automatically.
Once the host application is working, continue with creating a virtual machine or learn about guest operating systems.
Practical installation examples
Typical personal Windows computer
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Continue past the welcome screen.
- Keep the default installation folder.
- Keep the default feature selection.
- Approve the VirtualBox networking components.
- Finish setup and open VirtualBox Manager.
Computer with limited system-drive space
- At the destination-folder page, select a suitable local drive with adequate free space.
- Ensure the selected folder permits application installation by an administrator.
- Continue with the normal feature and network-interface choices.
Laptop using an important network connection
- Save active work and pause downloads, calls, remote sessions, and other network-dependent tasks.
- Approve the VirtualBox network-interface installation when prompted.
- Allow time for Windows to reconnect to the network after setup.
Troubleshooting
The installer does not start
- The download may be incomplete, or you may have selected the wrong file. Download the Windows installer again from the official VirtualBox source.
- Windows may have blocked the file or may require elevated permission. Use an account with administrator rights and review the Windows security prompt.
- Only approve the installer when the file and source are trusted.
A warning appears about network connectivity
This usually means VirtualBox is preparing to install or update host network interfaces. Save online work, expect a temporary interruption, and approve the installation if your virtual machines require standard networking.
VirtualBox does not open after installation
- Restart Windows and try opening VirtualBox Manager again. A restart may be needed after driver or component installation.
- Check whether the setup wizard completed without errors.
- Run the installer again and use its repair or reinstall option if one is available.
The desired installation drive or folder cannot be selected
The location may lack free space, your account may not have write permission, or the folder may be unsuitable for application installation. Use the default program-installation directory or another local folder with sufficient space and administrator write permission.
Exam-relevant notes
- Windows is the host operating system in this lesson; an operating system installed inside a VM is the guest operating system.
- The installer is the Windows executable that launches the setup wizard.
- The installation directory stores VirtualBox program files.
- Feature selection controls which VirtualBox components and integration options are installed.
- VirtualBox network interfaces support virtual-machine networking and may briefly interrupt the host connection during installation.
- A successful installation opens VirtualBox Manager, but it does not create a virtual machine automatically.
